AIS members are all independently run businesses yet diverse in their scale, sector and market positioning. All gain advantage from the buying benefits and other forms of support that AIS provide to help them be competitive and give their customers value and choice. Many are iconic within their location and a part of the fabric of their town or city and community.
We have around 260 core AIS members and a further 90 who are part of INTERSPORT. There are also some who are solely members of our specialist flooring and toy divisions. These members together operate over 1000 retail stores and many are also transactional online.
Pride in their independence
There is no typical AIS member other than a pride in their independence with perhaps a long established family heritage and a strong ethos of customer service. Otherwise our members range from specialist high street fashion or cookware stores to town centre department or furniture stores to large out of town stores or regional chains. In recent years we have also welcomed Garden Centres into the group and have some who are regularly voted as being the best in the industry amongst our membership.
Whether through furniture specialists or department stores furniture is the largest product category within AIS being sold in well over half of our members’ stores. Department stores as a sector are a significant part of our group and represent about a third of the store estate.
