How to Create and Run Successful Social Media Competitions and Giveaways

Social media competitions and giveaways are great ways to build your store’s awareness, grow your online audience and increase engagement with your existing customer base. 

And because people by nature, love winning prizes, these types of social posts will naturally garner more engagement and further your reach. 

IMPORTANT: Before you Start – Refer to the Legal Guidelines 

Before activating your social media giveaway campaign make sure you refer to the rules and guidelines set out by governing UK bodies, the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP), and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). 

Campaign Checklist 

Follow these step-by-step instructions to make the most of your social media competition or giveaway campaign: 

  • Choose the prize, this could be a sofa, an outfit, or a monetary voucher to spend in-store or in your online store. 

  • Decide how people will enter the competition and determine the information that will be required from them. 

  • TIP: Keep it simple and offer clear step-by-step instructions.

  • Decide what your target goal is and refine your entry requirements accordingly. 

  • TIP: To increase followers, a requirement should be to ‘follow your account’, to increase your email database, a requirement might be to ‘sign-up for your newsletter’, and to increase reach and audience, a requirement should be ‘share’ and ‘tag a friend’.

  • Make sure your terms and conditions are visible and that they comply with the UK legal guidelines. Create a strong graphic to support your campaign.

  • TIP: To further the engagement of your campaign, use the graphic in your brick-and-mortar store if applicable.

  • Go go go. Promote the giveaway on your social media accounts, making sure the deadline for submitting entries is visible. 

  • TIP: Try building the hype by running a countdown campaign until the competition goes live.

  • Once the deadline has passed, select, and contact the winner.

  • Make sure the winner receives the prize as soon as possible. 

  • TIP: Finish your campaign with ‘a winner’s story’ – checking that the winner is happy to be named or share images of them with their prize.
